Hey all,

Our local bar has a lot of older dudes. My roomies are mid-20s. Where do you all go?

Any post-college crowd?
A grad students hangout would be cool too, although I guess they mostly don't have time to go out. ;p

What would you like to see change in the Sunset?

Besides stopping old people from elbowing you in the stomach just to get on the bus, what would you like to see change in the Sunset?

I'm doing a "Community Action" project and I figured I might as well apply it to my neighborhood.

Some ideas are putting more trash cans/signs out on Ocean Beach (although I realize the tide gets high), community garden (is there one in the sunset?)...

I HAVE to do some type of community service project that will essentially last for a long period of time....it can't just be a beach cleanup day.

So if you've got some ideas or gripes about the neighborhood please let me know! This is a great opportunity to put your ideas to work, especially if you're too busy to get them accomplished. Thanks!!!!

Sunset Compost Campaign

Working towards zero waste, the purpose of the Neighborhood Compost Campaign is to promote composting through a variety of outreach methods with the goal of increasing both participation and volume.

Starting on February 1st, SF Environment will launch the compost campaign in the Sunset area (exact routes are being determined) We will be knocking on roughly 6800 doors, and talking with neighbors about composting. A true grassroots effort!

You need only to attend one training session and then commit to walk a city block, unless you have campaign or grassroots experience and would like to take a role as one of our 20 needed field managers. Also, we need some creativity in giving each of the teams names---One thought I had was that we could call each team a compostable item. For example, the coffee cup team. Other ideas are welcomed. We also need people who may not be able to walk but could assemble the clipboards and walking materials.

So far, our team of volunteer activists are calling themselves the Green
Guardians (possible superpowers included!) totals around 60 folks. To reach the goal of 6800, we need at least 150 to participate by walking one city block.

If 150 people walk one city block, we can reach our goal! Please sign up as soon as you can so we coordinate maps, walking scripts, etc. Chinese speakers needed.

WHAT: Neighborhood Compost Campaign
WHEN: February 1st-15th (Training dates January 12,13,19,20,29) WHERE: Sunset compost routes (TBD)

BE A GREEN GUARDIAN!

a friend in the neighborhood just alerted me today to the fact that there have been a series of muggings in the blocks surrounding 19th and taraval. a friend of ours was just mugged a week or so ago. apparently there are a few gangs (one chinese and one mexican) who have been hanging around the new(ish) hawaiian bbq on the corner. they have been preying on people walking home from local bars. the word is that they send in a scout to watch people at the bars -- how much they are drinking, how they are paying, how much cash they have, etc. -- and then follow their victims until they get at least a block or so off of taraval street. our friend was mugged at 20th and ulloa.

please be careful!!

Together these agencies and TMD will serve as the project team.

A Project Working Group that includes MTA’s Executive Director/CEO, the MTA board chair, and the City Controller will help ensure that the TEP stays on track with budget, timeline, deliverables and staffing.

Meeting summaries are available.

A Technical/Regional Advisory Committee that includes representatives from various City departments and local and regional transit agencies will provide technical review and comment during development of the TEP and draft recommendations.

Best Chinese food on Taraval?

There are so many to choose from, and no idea which one[s] will be best. [to my american-ish tastes?]
I mean, I am down to try more unusual food, but once at Go Go Cafe, we ordered the black bean catfish, and rather than fillets, it was the whole fish, chopped up, eyeballs and all. And...we don't eat those parts, really... ;p (and we love Go Go otherwise--late night; combo specials=good)

Suggestions in the 30-something Avenues especially welcome!
Also the best of the ones from other areas [ie Ocean] that hang delivery ads on doors.

SUNSET SEX SCANDAL!!!

Yeah- so I'm reading the April issue of San Francisco magazine on the L coming home from work the other day and what should I feast my eyes on but an FBI surveillance shot of my local barber, Yuen Poon, and this big article about how the feds raided her brothel on 19th Avenue.

Just when you think this neighborhood is dead...

I've been going to get my haircut at Poon's Hong Kong Hair Salon on Taraval at 17th for years. Poon never really gave me that great of a cut I guess, but hell- it was only $8.00 and quick! At first I never really thought anything was too out of the ordinary at the salon. The staff was always friendly and they always had
an issue of Jane for me to read while getting my haircut. Sure they were always yellin' at each other in Cantonese, but I figured they were just family.

Sometime around 2001 a visiting friend of mine returned from the salon with some suspicion that something was "going on in the back". I had never even realized that there was a "back" to the place. But sure enough I too started to notice some peculiar behavior every time I went in for a cut. For one, everyone in the joint seemed startled every time I walked in. Sure I was the only white boy to seemingly step foot in the place, but there was an air of something peculiar in the way they greeted me. Then I started to notice more and more older Chinese men coming into the salon, some even bald, blurting out abrupt chunks of Cantonese
decree and being motioned to scurry into the back room.

For a longtime I conjectured the scenario to be something as benignly traditional as an illicit gambling den where gamers laid around high in a dreamy fog of opium trying to focus on their cards while hired "company" doted on their every wish. I was partially right. Upon one visit I actually got a glimpse of the inner world when a young Chinese girl appeared out of the back while I was sitting in the barber chair. Her attire could only be described as 80s hooker chic and I was immediately beguiled by the lack of creative fantasy amongst middle-aged Chinese men. But just as sudden as she had appeared, Poon yelled something impetuous at her and she receded back into her lair. At that point I just came to the obvious conclusion that some sort of massage "with benefits" situation was transpiring in the back and that's how I left it.

Well dig this.

As it turns out, Poon was running her own little ho house in the back of the salon and turning a pretty penny in the process. Apparently the operation blew up so big that the little walls of the salon could no longer house the madness and she had to expand the ever-growing enterprise into a 3-bedroom house on 19th
Avenue (right around the corner). She was makin' bank as local johns paid visit day and night to have a sample of the latest product that had been trafficked into the Sunset via a vast and complex sex slave network with roots stretching all the way to rural Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. Big Pimpin' in capital
Chinese characters.

But, as often is the case, Poon got a little too confident with the success of her ballin' and her bucket started getting holes in it. Neighbors started getting suspicious, some downright incensed. It wasn't long before someone started whispering in the ear of SF Vice and before you knew it investigators were snooping
around Poon's trash wondering what kind of beast was producing this size payload of condom rappers and empty lube bottles. On a dreary day in January of last year a team of feds decided to find out.

Poon got raided and arrested on charges of housing prostitution and human trafficking. They also arrested 4 naked girls who were chillin' all up in the joint. Some couldn't even speak a word of english. They uncovered all kinds of craziness, including 120K in cash and about 12 johns who happened to pay a visit at the
wrong time. Everybody got hauled downed to Bryant street and when the smoke cleared and the story finally surfaced it was more nefarious in scope than anyone (especially me) had fathomed. We're talking massive Pan-Asian sex-slave operation involving a battery of clandestine recruiters, hundreds of regional
managers with parlors and bordellos peppered all over the states from here to Atlanta. Thousands of women sucked up from all over the eastern pacific rim and shuffled into a pachinko machine-like trafficking industry that confiscates their passports (most of them fake anyway) and drops them into a blurry maelstrom
of stealthy sex-crazed destinations where they're forced to turn tricks and watch Seinfeld all day every day until they can pay off their "debt" and then move out to the Bunny Ranch in Nevada and marry some dim-witted bartender.

Yep.... it's a living.....

Needless to say, I'm looking for a new barber.
I typically like to keep it under $15.00 a cut.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Yes, Sprint and another company intend to install two separate transmitters at the Presbyteriann church near 44th and Judah.

As manny of you know this technology uses microwave radiation that studies are showing to cause serious health effects. There was already one public hearing about this, and there is supposedly going to be a neighborhood meeting for concerned members of the community. I just wanted to let you know this is happening and I wil be sure to contact this tribe when I hear the next meeting time. Let me know if you have any questions,

Are we to let Babylon raise yet another tower amidst the land of barbarian tribes?

The Amish practice of "barn raising" is a wonderful community practice. While we may not be ready to grow beards, wear homespun bonnets or give up our technology, we do want to follow this admirable example of spirit-in-action.

Let's all help one another. Together, we can fix up that room, redo that yard, build that shed, clean up that garage... All while building community and making friends. This is the Gift Economy actualized!

Tantra teacher looking for a new place to rent in the sunset

As our landlord in the outer sunset just died, I'm taking this as an opportunity to find someplace even better than where I've been living, have new adventures in a new space, with new people, more love, more fun and play, new insights. Do you or anyone you know have a place to rent me? I am an artist, writer, model, healer, but my primary means of support is teaching Tantra Yoga. I teach at home, with students who are reverential, meditative sessions, sacred, though often involving sensuality in the quest for higher awareness.
I'd like to find a room that is relatively quiet and private, or an inexpensive in law or studio apartment, preferably in the outer sunset, the closer to Judah the better. My range is 450 to 800 dollars, and I think I need something for Aug. 1, but the details on that may change as I learn more about our situation. I always pay bills and rent conscientiously, am pleasant, never moody or mean, but respectful.
I'd like to sublet, or deal with a landlord who understands an alternative lifestyle, as I don't have the usual 9 to 5 job, rental, and credit history. I always pay up front, don't believe in owing anything. I have often lived outside, practicing my spiritual path, have worked in a more fluid manner, going where I am needed. I don't have scary vices, am mature, but young spirited, and can go month to month, or sign a lease.
If anyone wants to know more about my Tantra teaching, please take a look at www.freewebs.com/lucidbody. My art can be seen at http://lucidvision.mosaicglobe.com. I have lots I could put up in the house if you like.
Thanks so much, neighbs.

But I deal with enough two-faced corporate bullshit in real life to tolerate it on my free time. Take your profits and schtick it straight up your pupsen. And dat is all da people need ta know.

chinese gangbangers jump and stab 3 irish americans

on monday morning at around 2.30am, three irish american guys in their mid twenties were jumped and stabbed by a pack of chinese gangbangers (rumored to have been around 30 of them) in the parking lot of the 7-11 on 32nd and taraval. apparently at least one them was waving around a gun as well.

all i can say is WHAT THE FUCK?! a bunch of snot nosed asian kids who only know the pack mentality to play tough think they can get away with jumping guys whose grandparents probably built the houses they sleep in at night?

granted, i am pretty riled up because one of the guys seriously hurt is one of my relations, but i am really starting to get pissed off at all of the senseless nonsense that has been going on in my neighborhood that our supervisor seems to be doing anything about. i've heard from several people that this sort of incident is nothing new, just more severe than others. whatever the case, it seems as though these attacks are escalating and i *really* don't want to see my neighborhood turn into a race riot -- and if these things keep happening i am afraid that is exactly what will happen.

so what can a concerned citizen do? my first thought is to write fiona ma and raise my concerns with her as directly as the system will allow. my second is to try to petition the district to shut down the gaming place on taraval where a mass of these punks seem to congregate. if anyone has any other constructive suggestions i would love to hear it....

Fleishhacker Pool

When I was about 5 years old, part of my Dad's job was inspecting the Zoo (he manages the City's water system). One day he took me out there to cruise around and I'll never forget walking along the length of this massive, Grand Canyon-esque empty pool and gawking up at the unimaginable concrete diving platform. For many years I wondered if it were a dream, some kind of weird childhood memory, so I started asking not too long ago and turns out, it really was there (duh!)! It was Fleishhacker Pool.

The Western Neighborhoods Project (great website) had this page about it:

http://outsidelands.org/sw8.html

Makes me sad! Wish they could have turned that land into something better........maybe someone will come along and revitalize the poolhouse the way they did with the Beach Chalet.

Hello, I wish to inform all you barbarians that there has been a movement to stop all bonfires on Ocean Beach after 10PM. This includes legal bonfires where the park meets the beach, between fulton and Lincoln.

questions...

1)anybody gone to that indonesian place on taraval on 17th or 18th??

2)what's up with that gold mirror? there are always people in there and well, it looks a little pricey for me, but i'm still interested if it's any good....

3)i live on 21st and ulloa....honestly honestly tell me what your fav place for chinese delivery is, or any delivery place besides pizza!

4)good dim sum anywhere? i'm weary of trying new places, i usually try and rely on the advice of others. apparently good luck dim sum in the richmond is great, but how about the sunset?

5)i came home to my roommate eating hawaiian bbq from the place on sloat next to blockbuster...has anybody gone? it smelled amazing.

6)ok so i walked into the irish cultural center and it was dead quiet, a whole lot of empty rooms and a bar. what goes on in there?!

i know there's more, but that's it for now.

The new burrito joint on Judah (I think at 43rd?) is good! It's not that spicy, but everything is fresh and yummy. I'm so glad there's a new burrito place in the hood! Anyone else try it?

I found a great mechanic!

I have received outstanding service from Sunset 76, 1700 Noriega St at 24th ave (753-9635). I've been really disappointed with several other places I've taken my beater van. But this place treated me right and did an outstanding job on my van. I've had tires installed, new front shocks and new u-joints. I found their prices to be fair enough. Other places refused outright to work on my van, or didn't do what they said they'd do.

Now, one real test of a mechanic is how things go if some rework is needed after a repair. My van had a stripped lug bolt (holds the wheel on). It was one of eight such bolts on each wheel. It was stripped when I bought it and had no nut. They replaced the tires and then, unfortunately, a few days after I retrieved the van this lug nut became loose and fell inside the rotor! I was bummed and called them up. They drove out the next day to my house and instpected it. They appologized (even though it isn't really clear they caused this problem). But they never said anything like that. Instead, they said they'd take care of it. They sent out a tow truck and towed it back to the station (it wasn't safe to drive this way). They fixed it for free.

They also discovered that I needed the u-bolts. I was having a lot of vibration while I drove it. They figured it out and did the work. Now it drives smooooooooth! Wahoo!

They have won my business. I could not be happier!

Anne, Eddie Spaghetti and I (and a few more non-sunset friends) are going out to Annie's Coctail Lounge for some kareoke tonight. Sorry about the last minute thing, but if anyone would like to meet us there, we'd love to hang with more barbarians. We'll be there around 8:30pm. Annie's is across the street from the Hall of Justice.

So it was about 3:30am when I heard some guy yapping up a storm outside. I went out to the living room to yell out the window for him to shut up and when I stuck my head out, the street was full of cops. Then I looked up and saw a guy standing on the corner of the roof of the building next to ours. He was talking to somebody, possibly the cops, and said "there's a guy looking out his window at me." I didn't even know what to say. Was this guy suicidal (not like a 3 story jump would be a guaranteed death), or just generally wacked? I woke Anne up and we watched him out of our bedroom window as he walked over to a skylight and was looking in. Then the cops all left and he just stayed up on the rooftop for a while and we went to sleep. This was on Irving between 33rd and 34th. Anyone hear anything about this?

My mom injured herself while vacationing in Morocco. After an hour or two on the phone to the hospital (with my less than rusty french) and the consulate, I need to go get myself some international calling cards. Anyone know of a local spot to buy them? I know I can always go downtown or to the mission.

You know I initially liked Naan N Curry. I stopped by for lunch there and I got a chicken and lamb tikki masala dishes for my friend and I.

We were terribly disappointed. It was very bland and my chicken was very watery. Not one hint of spice.

Did I catch them on their off days? And what's w/ non-Indian folks cooking the food?

Hey everybody,
I just started a tribe called "Jupiter's BBQ in the Bay Area", thought I'd let y'all know. I'm hoping to get a weekly Golden Gate Park BBQ going, so the sunset folks should be the first to know about it. Join up, I'll keep you posted.
Thanx,
Jupiter

New Dim Sum Place

A new take-out dim sum place opened up at 24th and Irving where a sit-down Chinese restaurant used to stand. I know take-out dim sum is just bizarre but I tried it and it was delicious. I had the steamed pork bun, shrimp and vegetables, and sesame ball. All were way above my expectations. Everything was fresh and the bean paste in the sesame ball had that delicious woody flavor that I love.

Hey y'all,

What a wonderful weekend!! I hope everyone spent it well.

So I was wondering what happened on Friday night -- I was coming home about 1PM from Marin going south on 19th ave. Police blocked both sides of 19th ave around Quintara [I think] and a couple of blocks further south.

Does anyone know what happened there?

I'm shooting a short on Saturday in the neighborhood and was wondering if anybody was interested in being an extra. The shoot is between 10 and 1 at a bar near 9th & Irving, and it's a comedy. We could use a few bar patron extras. Msg me if you're interested and I'll give more details.

My band has a gig in Alameda, CA this Sat, 3/5 9p-1a

Once in a while comes a gig not to be missed...

This Saturday, March 5, Pavlov's Kats will be laying down the rock, blues, swing and a whole lot more in an evening of dance music to help celebrate two birthdays!

Barbara Snethen and Frank Bonita will both be celebrating their birthdays this Saturday and the Kats will be scratchin' from 9pm until 1am at John Patricks in Alameda.

Joining the Kats this time will be a very special guest performer, Francisco Ochoa, whose energy and masterful guitar solos will blow you away!

We've expanded our songlist recently to include songs by INXS, Elvis Costello, The Stones, Beatles, Doobie Brothers and others. And there will be some other new surprises at this gig too...

We have a web site with our song list (over 70 songs!), plus a demos page, and a page dedicated to details about this gig.

http://www.pavlovskats.com

John Patrick's is located at 1813 Park Street, behind "Ron Goode Toyota".

A map and details are on the above website, but here's a shortcut:
http://www.timefold.com/gig

Hope to see you there!

I used to work out at Golden Gate fitness. They jacked up the prices. I don't feel the equipment/service/hours are in line with the price.

If anyone knows of a closer gym (besides 24 hr Nautilus) that is $30/mo or has much better facilities, please pass on the info. I don't want anything fancy just the basics (iron wts, bench, squat rack, etc). A pool would be cool but not a requirement.

Thanks in advance,

Serves some new style of Chinese desserts, complete with posters of the healthful benefits. I've never heard of half the ingredients, but I had a nice mango pudding on Wednesday.

Anyone intrigued?
New Addition to the Sunset

Howdy Yall, me 'n my two pups just made the move out west from 'back east', meaning, Alamo Square/Lower Haight. Can't believe we ever hesitated - I LOVE it out here! Could not be happier. I've lived in the City for 15 years but am still getting my bearings out here and trying to figure out what's what....seems like such a treasure trove of hidden little secrets.

Things I've figured out:

- Good Mexican food at La Playa Taqueria (Noriega/44th ish?).
- I can park right in front of my house most nights - woo hoo!
- Good hardware store @ Taraval/44th.
- Rinse car off once a week to avoid rusting (?) - is that true?

Things I'd like to know:

- Any Italian restaurants anywhere?
- Where's the best place to do laundry/dry cleaning/alteration?
- What goes on at the Irish Cultural Center?
- Where is there a net cafe, if any?
- A decent bar to get a cocktail in that isn't either too hardcore locals only or too cheesy?

Just curious. I'm sure there will be many more questions.

Thanks!
Dolce

I heard a dead cow washed up on OB yesterday near my house and it makes me sooooooooooooo sad. They're going to bury it 'in the sand', which I thought was odd. Does that mean on the beach itself?
