Besides stopping old people from elbowing you in the stomach just to get on the bus, what would you like to see change in the Sunset?
I'm doing a "Community Action" project and I figured I might as well apply it to my neighborhood.
Some ideas are putting more trash cans/signs out on Ocean Beach (although I realize the tide gets high), community garden (is there one in the sunset?)...
I HAVE to do some type of community service project that will essentially last for a long period of time....it can't just be a beach cleanup day.
So if you've got some ideas or gripes about the neighborhood please let me know! This is a great opportunity to put your ideas to work, especially if you're too busy to get them accomplished. Thanks!!!!

Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Mon, March 6, 2006 - 11:53 PMI live in the inner sunset, so this might be a bit biased...
Can you do something about the weather ?
I would also like to see more restaurants (especially around lincoln and 9th).
How about some nice new blankys for the people on the street, you know the ones that ask for change and later puke outside your door.
Laminate the street and roll it up twice a day, doggy poop mine field has yet to get me, but there's always tomorrow.
The cops, the N judah that ambulance that keeps on going around my block and the emergency horn up there with the blinky lights, they all need louder sirens, that or distribute a megaphone (1) to each resident, that way we are all even.
Besides from that I love my hood, so don't change a thing please.

Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Tue, March 7, 2006 - 9:06 AMPut up check point patrols on every street that enters the Irving corridor to make sure that everyone who continues on to that street actually has a valid drivers license and has actually driven a car before.

Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Tue, March 7, 2006 - 9:56 AMha! the same should be done on noriega and taraval. with the addition of firebombing all cars that double park on those streets, especially taraval. with a streetcar running up and down that street, people who double park there really do deserve their own special and more depraved ring of hell!!
but as for things that can really be done, adding trashcans is a nice idea but what i've noticed is how filthy the busier business laden streets are. when i lived on twin peaks my roomie and i bought a bunch of litter collection gear and would walk up there multiple times a week and pick up trash like a couple of felons. it really bothered us that one of the prettiest spots in the city was so filthy (we surmised it was at the hands of teenagers since the bulk of the trash was fast food containers, condoms and ridiculously cheap booze bottles), especially since so many tourists go up there and that might be one of their impressions of our beautiful city. i feel the same way about my hood -- it really could be nice despite the dingy weather...
other than that an outreach program to ease racial tensions would be really nice. i really love it here but i would never raise my kids here simply because of the gang violence exhibited by the chinese in this neighborhood. it's really a shame since my husband was born and raised here, but i don't want my children in danger of getting their asses kicked or worse, stabbed or shot, because they are white. it's my understanding (and this could be false) that a lot of young chinese kids turn to gangs because their homes are so overcrowded with often older relatives they can find no sense of companionship or privacy, so they turn to other avenues. i really think there should be some type of community recreation center like there is in many projects and other troubled neighborhoods to steer these kids in a healthier direction. i don't know if it would work, but it's an idea... -

Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Tue, March 7, 2006 - 12:16 PMI've lived in the Sunset for 6 months. Prior to living here, I lived in the Mission for 10 years, Lower Haight for 4 years, Rockridge for 2 years and South Berkeley for 1 year.
The Sunset has its ups and downs. The ups? I haven't heard a gunshot yet. That remark cannot be stressed enough (by me) as a positive reason for living in the Sunset ... there were times in the Mission when we would hear gunshots at least once a week. The access to Golden Gate Park cannot be underplayed either ... it has been AMAZING to merely walk to the park with lunch in-hand, to ride my bike to the ocean to watch a sunset, to visit the Arboretum on a lark, to walk to the new museum ... bliss.
The downs? Everything closes far too early. Corner stores closing at 11pm??? WTF! Not all of us work 9-5 and go to bed at 10pm. There's not enough places to hear live music.
And, as a bicyclist, I have to say this: you can either have all those potholes in the Sunset or you can have your ambient dimly lit streets, but you can't have both. -

Thank you! I was beginning to think I was the only one out here who felt this way. On the flip side, I wholeheartedly agree with your comment about gunshots: once, when I lived on Potrero Hill, a man was gunned down within 50 feet of my front door. Not a pleasant thing to witness.

Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Sat, October 7, 2006 - 11:06 PMEl Burrito Express on Taraval at 26th is super yum, but they close pretty early!
there are a couple in inner sunset that are open later, though--La Avenida [yum] on Irving near 7th, and El Gordo [haven't been] on 9th b/n Lincoln & Irving.
There's a place on Judah around 44th, too, which was good.
But more would be great!

Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Thu, March 16, 2006 - 9:34 PMIn a word: TREES.
This is the single most aching oversight in this neighborhood - it would be so sweet if we had more trees. And who doesn't love trees? It's an easy cause to get people behind & the City is generally kind about tree planting permits. Plus they would help hide those GODawful power wires that are a total blight here (you notice St. Francis wood doesn't have em, but I digress).
I am also w/Lola on the community center thing. It seems that what exists is for the very young or older/retired. Nothing for teens, young adults, or non-familied adults for that matter. Most stuff seems geared towards either very young kids or retirees. A skate park might be a nice idea given that we're so tied to surf culture and it's a good outlet for teens (or anyone for that matter) provided it's not allowed to degenerate into some bullshit like the video arcades.
I'd kill for a creperie a la Crepevine or Squat and Gobble. I am not joking.
Wish we could have a single screen arthouse cinema somewhere (dreaming, I know, but you asked!).

-
Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Fri, March 17, 2006 - 10:25 AMNothing wrong with video arcades - some of my fondest memories are of besting my friends at Donkey Kong.

Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Fri, March 17, 2006 - 5:26 PMtrees are an awesome idea!! i love it! i would even help plant them if that was a project that got organized...
as for the power lines, pg&e is actually in the process of putting power lines underground. in case you were wondering what the big mess on taraval street is at around 21st avenue, that's the project that is responsible. i'm sure eventually that project will expand to the rest of the neighborhood. honestly, the power lines are overhead around here because of the time period in which homes were built... i totally agree that it will be a *lot* nicer when they go underground!
solange i know it's not much of a consolation but there is a squat and gobble on west portal at the corner of ulloa, right across from west portal station... -

Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Fri, March 17, 2006 - 7:04 PMAnd isn't there a Crepevine on Irving? -
-
Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Sat, March 18, 2006 - 10:07 AMyes, there is, but 7th & Irving is a long way from the outer sunset & the parking is difficult. I don't even consider the inner and outer sunsets to be the same neighborhood, really - they are miles apart. then again, i live in the southwestern section of the sunset, so someone on 46th & lincoln might differ with me.
i'm just being selfish, wishing there were a crepevine on, say, 30th & taraval or something. -

Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Sat, March 18, 2006 - 3:32 PMI've been hoping for more trees too. I asked my landlord about getting one put in in front of our building, but the problem is, he'd be responsible for the upkeep on it. And I think you can be fined if it becomes a nuisance - dropping leaves/seeds, interfering with power lines, etc. I've always thought that there weren't many trees out here because of the sandy soil. Not much for the roots to grab onto. Plus, the winds can be pretty harsh out here. I'd hate to have one fall on my house! Sigh, it would be nice though. :)
I'm so happy to hear about the power lines going underground! I agree, they've been such an eyesore!

Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Mon, March 20, 2006 - 8:34 PMGod forbid a landlord would have to do some upkeep! ~sigh~
Sorry, I'm jaded by 16 years of SF landlords.
I would LOVE for the power lines to go underground. I don't just think its the era in which is was built, but the milieu as well - this was cheap working class housing. St. Francis Wood was in before us & they have grass by the sidewalks (the status quo in LA, WTF?) and buried lines. But I love the Sunset anyway, wires and all! It kinda sucks that there's a big ole giant pole w/major lines right smack in front of the ocean view from my desk. EVERYONE should have my problems, no?
Waffles? Did I hear something about waffles? Who what were? I'm a waffle freak!

Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Sat, March 18, 2006 - 3:38 PMOh, about the movie thing. I don't think this fits into what you're looking for, but I just remembered... across the street from me - Noriega & 47th Ave - there's a house that has a big screen in its back yard. In the summer, they open it up for people to come watch movies. I've never been, so I don't know what the setup's like, but I thought it was kinda cute. They tend to show a lot of action films though.
I'd be totally down with an arthouse. The closest one I can think of is over on Balboa in the...dare I say it?...Richmond district! Not quite arty though, just cheap and they have double features, if I remember correctly. But I like Le Video as a rental place though.

Article about undergrounding wires / Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Sat, October 7, 2006 - 11:12 PMwww.examiner.com/a-273733~...wires.html
I read this, or something like it, recently. There's a survey, too, about putting a tax on businesses to underground more wires.
I'd love to see more trees, too. Apparently the main problem is that they can bust open water and sewer lines. ;(

Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Tue, March 28, 2006 - 4:59 PMWhatever has changed recently that there are more gunshots and such things late at night - some of it started when Java Beach added the bar - I live 2 blocks away and the weekends are noisier and there are more people/bottles/action/wrecks/etc on the weekends. From hit and runs to homeless to sideshows - not the sleepy little place it was 2 years ago. I'd like to see it safer.

Tue, May 23, 2006 - 6:12 PMOkay, I note my disclaimer upfront that I dream of opening a bookstore, but aside from that, it would be great to have something closer than having to hike to Borders at Stonestown or the indie Acorn at 9th & Irving. Are there any hidden bookstores in the Sunset? -

Tue, May 23, 2006 - 8:17 PMThere's a great used book store @ 9th and Judah called Overland, and further down the road there's another one which name I can't remember, they sell mostly used paperbacks...

Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Tue, October 10, 2006 - 2:03 PMI looooove the idea of a community garden!!! My boyfriend and I just moved to Ocean Beach a few months ago from L.A. and have been fantasizing about a community garden in our wonderful new neighborhood. And maybe since a lot of people responded about having more trees these 2 ideas can be joined together. Although, I love going to Golden Gate Park to get my tree fix! -

Re: What would you like to see change in the Sunset?
Sat, March 17, 2007 - 2:42 PMWe need more trees and gardens - especially in the outer sunset. It's a graveyard out here. It gets so gloomy in the summer when everything is dry and the fog rolls in. It's like living in the Nightmare Before Christmas. I met with Friends of the Urban Forest last week to talk about doing a mass tree planting in the outer sunset, but we need to get many, many more people involved. If you want to help, we need to round up a few dozen people that will plant a tree in their yard (or when possible, in the outer sidewalk in front of their house). Because the sidewalks are so narrow and there are so many telephone poles, there aren't a lot of places where the city will allow trees to be planted. The goal is to identify these places, and also find landlords/home-owners to plant in their yard. FUF will take care of breaking up concrete, getting permits and they will also subsidize the costs of the trees. If anyone is interested in volunteering or even in planting a tree in their yard, please send me and e-mail. It will be an on-going project.
