restaurants on Sloat Blvd...

So there's a diner @ the corner, I use to go that on Sloat Blvd near the Doggie Diner place & the surf shop.

They served some pretty good sized breakfast.

Any ideas? Can you recommend any there?

That's a tough one, Penny. The best restaurant I can think of that is near there is the Beach Chalet and the Park Chalet. It's within walking distance. As for actually on Sloat, you've stumped me.

That would be the Ocean Beach Cafe on Sloat. It's really good - huge breakfasts and some Greek dishes. I am pretty sure they're still around.

Correction: it's John's Ocean Beach Cafe and it turns out to be closed on Mondays. hrmph.

I have been looking for a breakfast place near home and just checked out John's last weekend.

I didn't like it. For my taste, the potatoes were too soggy and prices too high. My other breakfast place on Ocean lets me substitude canned fruit for potatoes, they don't.

It isn't on Sloat, but the Mayflower on Ocean Blvd (at Miramar -- right by the 76 station) makes a great breakfast. Ask for your bacon crisp and it comes dry! Very consistently good service and food.

I echo the Kludge's comments. I didn't like John's nearly as well as the significantly lower priced Mayflower.

There's a new sushi place in the Albertson's center on Sloat. Anyone been there yet?

I've been wanting to check out that sushi place. Group outing, perhaps?

I tried Toyo sushi in the Albertson's shopping center on Sloat.

The maguro and hamachi were very good. The salmon was not tender and I didn't like it. Their "ika rings" were way too oily and were overcooked. The sushi wasn't inexpensive. I still prefer Xiao's sushi house (3925 Irving @40th). But, to be fair, I don't like Xiao's hamachi and they don't even make ika rings. Still, Xiao's sushi is a great value and their service is splendid. Plus, they *deliver* anywhere in the sunset! Sushi delivered to your home for less than the cost of a fancier sushi place! Wahoo!!

But, home-delivered tempura is usually not worth it -- tempura really needs to be eaten shortly after it is made or it isn't very good.

Ah, yes -- I did try their sushi rolls too a couple of days ago.

I had the sake nigiri. It was pretty fresh.

I had the tempura shrimp bad idea to have it to go. Take hoco's advice and never order anything tempura to go. It just take better when it's cooked and added onto your place.

I had the rock n' roll, which was pretty good there sauce.

Spicy tuna was pretty tasty and spicy, which I like.

Sushi there is reasonably price in the center.

We like Toyo pretty well, and have been there at least 5-8 times now. The lunch specials and dinner combos are reasonably priced, and some of the rolls are really tasty. Tempura is good, too. I think the crab may have been to mayo-y, but otherwise, good stuff.

For breakfast, the Bashful Bull Too at 46th and Taraval is pretty good. Definitely a greasy spoon [the tuna melt was Way too greasy for me!], but breakfasts are done pretty well, and I think I've heard good things about the burgers and shakes. Not super cheap, but they have some deals, the booths are comfy, and the bathrooms are clean.

the Thai place [between Tully's and Blockbuster] in the big shopping center is Really Great--fast, cheap, tasty. Strip-mall narrow restaurant, but the lavendar paint job is nice. ;P

Ono Hawaiian BBQ is tasty if greasy. Good representative of Hawaiian diner food, served with rice, and macaroni salad.
